UTSA Research awards seed funding to faculty members

UTSA Research awards seed funding to faculty members

by utsaengineer / Wednesday, 06 September 2017 / Published in COE Announcements

The Office of the Vice President for Research’s internal seed funding programs support UTSA’s research enterprise by awarding faculty members seed funding to obtain preliminary data that can be cited in applications for extramural funding and enhance the breadth of scholarly and creative activity taking place on campus. These grants also support new areas of research for UTSA faculty and advances our goal of reaching Tier I status.

In the latest round of funding, the Office of the Vice President for Research awarded a total of $340,000 for 29 research projects at UTSA and with collaborators at the Southwest Research Institute (SwRi).

“It is always a challenge to select the recipients based on the quality of the proposals we receive from UTSA faculty. There are a number of considerations which are evaluated and weighted, in order to maximize our research investment,” explained Jaclyn Shaw, Director for Research Support (ORS), who administers the VPR internal research grants.

Faculty is encouraged to submit their research proposals. It is a great opportunity for UTSA faculty to take advantage of internal funds to work out new ideas, unique collaborations or explore further avenues in their research. These funds also help faculty finesse their research proposals to apply for additional federal funding.

The trend in federal grants awards are larger, multi-disciplinary approaches with a number of faculty collaborating across departments and colleges. These teams and applications can take months to assemble, and the Office of Research Support team can help faculty members identify researchers outside their departments and colleges for collaboration.
