On Monday August 17, 2015, the official UTSA College of Engineering’s Tailgating Team, the Brute Squad, gave $12,000 to 12 student organizations during Roadrunner Days’ Major Exploration event. Roadrunner Days is a week-long event geared towards freshmen to help them become familiar with the UTSA Main Campus and the college in which they are enrolled.
Major Exploration is a freshman open house held in each college, and the College of Engineering event allowed all engineering student organizations to showcase their groups to the incoming freshmen population. More than 600 freshmen students attended. At the end of the event, members of the Brute Squad presented $1,000 checks to all the student organizations in attendance
“We are thankful for the Brute Squad’s financial contributions to our organizations, but also in the ongoing way they help our students as mentors and advisors throughout the year,” said JoAnn Browning, dean of the College of Engineering.
The student groups who received checks from the Brute Squad include UTSA Engineers Without Borders, UTSA Mexican American Engineers and Scientists, UTSA Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, UTSA College of Engineering Student Council, UTSA American Society of Civil Engineers, UTSA Society of Automotive Engineers, UTSA American Society of Mechanical Engineers, UTSA Society of Women Engineers, UTSA Texas Society of Professional Engineers, UTSA Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, UTSA Biomedical Society of Engineers, and UTSA College of Engineering.
David Spencer, one of the founders of the tailgating organization, said part of each sponsor’s financial contribution is set aside to provide the student organizations with seed money needed to begin each academic year.
