Funding Available to All Graduate Students

Valero Research Fellows

Goal

To increase the enrollment of graduate students with *disadvantaged backgrounds.

Ph.D. Programs

  1. The Valero Graduate Program will provide financial support of $25,000 for new Ph.D. students enrolled in any College of Engineering Ph.D. program if they are U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have *disadvantaged backgrounds.
  2. Six (6) slots will be available per year.
  3. Funding for a student will be limited to one (incoming) year. Thereafter the Ph.D. program will have to support the student.
  4. Each program should provide nominations to the office of the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies with relevant student application materials

M.S. Programs

  1. The Valero Graduate Program will provide financial support of $10,000 for new M.S. students enrolled in any College of Engineering graduate program if they are U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have *disadvantaged backgrounds.
  2. Six (6) slots will be available per year.
  3. Funding for a student will be limited to one (incoming) year.
  4. Each program should provide nominations to the office of the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies with relevant student application materials

*Disadvantaged Background means either: (1) must demonstrate financial needs as determined by FAFSA; or (2) that the individual comes from an environment that inhibited (but did not prevent) the person from obtaining the knowledge, skills, and ability to enroll in a graduate institution. Applicants must indicate their disadvantage status. The following are examples of factors to be considered:

  • Family income of applicant;
  • First generation of family to attend college;
  • Ability to speak more than one language;
  • Attending Texas schools in the lowest quarter of wealth per student distribution;
  • Growing up in South Texas-Border Area
  • Preference for female

    Valero Travel Awards

    Goal

    To assist graduate students in presenting their research at conferences.

    1. The Valero program will provide travel awards for qualified graduate students
    2. A one-time per year amount of up to $500 will be provided to selected students
    3. Faculty mentor will be required to provide at least $250 toward travel/registration from grants or other sources as partial matching for student to qualify
    4. Forty (40) slots will be available every year
    5. Student should have a paper accepted for presentation (oral/poster) at a national level conference. Travel to regional conferences will not be supported
    6. Students should apply to the office of the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies with relevant materials including a copy of the paper/abstract, proof of acceptance, details about the conference, and budget.
    7. Application should be submitted a minimum of 4 weeks in advance of anticipated travel
    8. Awards will not be based on equal distribution of funds to the programs but on the quality of the student.
    9. Award decisions will be made by the Dean’s office
    10. Funding may not be disbursed if high quality applications are not received

    Funding Available to M.S. Students Only

    Valero Research Scholarhips

    1. The Valero Graduate Funds Program will provide $1,000 annual scholarships for qualified M.S. students
    2. Fifty (50) slots will be available per year.
    3. Each program should provide nominations to the office of the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies with relevant student materials

    Valero Outstanding Master's Award

    1. The Valero Graduate Funds Program will provide $9,000 annual scholarships for qualified new M.S. students.
    2. Five (5) slots will be available per year.

    Valero Advanced Research Scholarhips

    1. The Valero Graduate Funds Program will provide $1,000 annual scholarships for qualified M.S. students
    2. Ten (10) slots will be available per year.
    3. At least a cumulative graduate grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale from at least 12 hours of graduate credits from College of Engineering..

    Funding Available to Ph.D. Students Only

    Valero Research Scholars

    1. The Valero program will supplement the funding provided to new Ph.D. students
    2. $7,500 will be provided per year to each Valero Scholar
    3. Funding will be provided for each student for a maximum of 2 years
    4. Thirteen (13) new slots every year will be available for a total of 25 Scholars at any given time.
    5. Funding will be limited to exceptionally qualified new recruits—not the average student
    6. The program should be used as an inducement for high quality students to join UTSA during the admissions process
    7. Each program should provide nominations to the office of the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies with relevant student application materials.
    8. Awards will not be based on equal distribution of funds to the programs but on the quality of the new recruit.
    9. Award decisions will be made by the Dean’s office in consultation with GARs/program directors as needed
    10. As part of the learning experience, all recipients will participate in classroom instructional activities.
    11. Funding may not be disbursed if high quality students are not nominated

    Valero Research Excellence Funds

    1. The Valero program will provide research funds for qualified Ph.D. students
    2. Students must have cleared their oral qualifying exams
    3. A one-time amount of $1,500 will be provided to selected students
    4. Ten (10) slots will be available every year
    5. Funding will be limited to exceptional students
    6. Funds need to be expended in one year and can be used for supplies, equipment, research related travel or a computer relevant to the student’s research
    7. Each program should provide nominations to the office of the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies with relevant materials regarding the student’s academic performance and research progress to date.
    8. Awards will not be based on equal distribution of funds to the programs but on the quality of the student.
    9. Award decisions will be made by the Dean’s office in consultation with GARs/program directors as needed.
    10. Funding may not be disbursed if high level students are not nominated

    Valero International Travel Awards

    1. The Valero program will provide travel awards for qualified graduate students travelling abroad to conduct research as part of College of Engineering’s international collaborations
    2. A one-time non-renewable award of up to $2,000 will be provided to selected students
    3. Five (5) slots will be available every year
    4. Student should have detailed documentation of proposed research
    5. Students should apply to the office of the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies with relevant materials including a copy of the research proposal, invitation from host institution, letter of support from UTSA research mentor, length of stay, and budget.
    6. Application should be submitted a minimum of 4 weeks in advance of anticipated travel
    7. Awards will not be based on equal distribution of funds to the programs but on the quality of the student.
    8. Award decisions will be made by the Dean’s office

    Valero Foreign Visiting Ph.D. Student Awards

    For Non-UTSA International Ph.D. Students Only

    1. The Valero Graduate Program will provide financial support of $500 per month to qualified international Exchange Ph.D. Students. Funding is limited to $1,000 per student.
    2. Only Ph.D. students are qualified for this support – no M.S. or post-docs will be considered.
    3. This financial support is to subsidize local living expenses of the visiting student. No air fare will be covered
    4. Five (5) slots will be available per year.
    5. Each sponsor/mentor should provide nominations to the office of the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies with relevant student and research activity materials.
    6. Funds not claimed four (4) months after the estimated starting date will be cancelled without further notice.
