Welcome to the College of Engineering at The University of Texas at San Antonio, where education and research are our highest priorities and excellence is the motto. The college is a major public provider of undergraduate and graduate engineering education in South Texas with an enrollment exceeding 3,400 students. We have seen an unprecedented increase of more than 100% in graduate enrollment over the past few years, and we continue to grow steadily. We are one of the top colleges for producing the most Hispanic engineers nationwide.

In response to our burgeoning student and faculty population, construction of a new 150,000-square-foot engineering and science building will begin in June 2017. This state-of-the-art facility includes cutting-edge teaching environments that lead the way for a flipped classroom design and multiple opportunities for hands-on learning in a 17,000 sq/ft maker space. These new spaces will allow our students to focus on project-based learning, where they have the chance to solve engineering problems in a variety of collaborative ways rather than just being observers in a lecture hall. Additionally, there will be spaces where students with an entrepreneurial spirit will have a place for early venture execution within the university or in collaboration with companies. The UTSA College of Engineering supports the successful launch of new technology ventures and helps our students bring their engineering ideas to life outside of the classroom.
Our undergraduate, ABET accredited programs in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering have been in place for several decades. In the recent past we have added degree programs in Biomedical Engineering and Computer Engineering. The programs offer curricula that combine a strong theoretical background with hands-on experience in excellent labs, and focus on teamwork and communication skills. We emphasize close interaction with outstanding faculty to create an atmosphere truly conducive to learning.
At the graduate level we offer Master of Science degrees in Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing and Enterprise Engineering, Materials Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Our doctoral programs include Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. These graduate programs offer opportunities for advanced study and research designed to prepare students for leadership roles in engineering careers with industry, government, or educational institutions. They also provide a pathway toward self-improvement and life-long learning for practicing engineers.
Cutting-edge research in a wide range of areas such as energy, security, environmental issues, materials, biomechanics, robotics, manufacturing, computational modeling, and sustainability is federally/state funded and contributes to maintain US competitiveness and security of the state and nation. To aid the economic development of the nation the College also works closely with industry.
UTSA has established a clear goal to become a top-tier research university. Since the year 2000 our annual research expenditures in the College of Engineering have increased more than 20-fold. In addition to research conducted in the departments, the College oversees several research centers and institutes, including the Texas Sustainable Energy Research Institute, which has received a $50m pledge of support from CPS Energy. In 2006, we expanded into the $84-million, 225,000-square-foot Biotechnology, Sciences and Engineering (BSE) Building to support new research initiatives and accommodate enrollment growth. The BSE Building is one of the largest educational buildings in the state of Texas and boasts state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities. In 2010 we added the 150,000-square-foot Applied Engineering and Technology (AET) Building, which has been designed to support world-class research and teaching in science and engineering. The four-floor facility includes 87 faculty offices, 36 laboratories, five classrooms and collaborative study niches. The ground floor includes classroom and laboratory space.

Dean of Engineering
JoAnn Browning, Dean and David and Jennifer Spencer Distinguished Chair, Professor of Civil Engineering. Ph.D. Purdue University. P.E. Kansas.
A leader in structural engineering and concrete research, Dr. Browning was named Dean and David and Jennifer Spencer Distinguished Chair of the UTSA College of Engineering in August 2014. Previously she was a faculty member at the University of Kansas for 16 years, and served 2 years as Associate Dean of Administration. While at KU, Dr. Browning twice was awarded the Miller Award for Distinguished Professional Service (2004 and 2011) and was the 2012 recipient of the Henry E. Gould Award for Distinguished Service to Undergraduate Education. In 2015 she was name a Purdue Distinguished Woman Scholar.
Dr. Browning has been active in the engineering community, locally as President of the Kansas Chapter of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and nationally with ACI, Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), Consortium of Universities for Research in Earthquake Engineering (CUREE), and the American Society of Civil Engineers. She has served on the Board of Directors of CUREE and ACI (beginning in 2015) and on the ACI 318 Building Code Committee.
Her own research interests include structural engineering, earthquake engineering, engineering materials, and reinforced concrete design and analysis. She is actively involved in research to improve the durability of concrete bridge decks through studies of corrosion protection systems and low-cracking high performance bridge decks. She also is active in research to improve the design and performance of concrete buildings and bridges subjected to earthquake motion. She received the American Concrete Institute’s Young Member Award for Professional Achievement in 2008 and was named an ACI Fellow in 2009.
Browning has worked with Dea Greenhoot and the KU CTE for the past few years developing procedures to affect cultural transformations in the way engineering courses are taught. This has included recruiting teaching faculty, post-docs, and education faculty mentors as well as re-designing classroom spaces to better host learning environments. Browning teaches civil engineering mechanics and structural engineering design and analysis courses.
College of Engineering The College of Engineering prepares students for lifelong learning and careers in engineering professions. It has been ranked for five years in a row among the top 10 best graduate schools for Hispanics. Service activities focus on outreach to K-12 students to support the STEM pipeline. Faculty members and students conduct research leading to innovative technologies in areas such as information security, biomedical systems, multifunctional materials, engineering infrastructure, manufacturing, computational modeling, energy and environmental technology. A bachelor’s degree program in chemical engineering begins in Fall 2017.
