Associate Professor of Medicine
Director, Interventional Research
Associate Director, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories

Educational Background: M.D., University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, 1981

Areas of Research Interest: Research interests include development of instrumentation to study cardiac mechanics in intact mouse hearts; nanotechnology stent to deliver drug and gene therapy through the barrier of atheroslerosis; and use of optical coherence tomography to predict subsequent rupture of atherosclerotic plaques and myocardial infarction.

Funding Sources:
Include the National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association, Veterans Administration, and Industry Sponsors.

Biotechnology for cardiovascular applications, including:
  1. Electrical engineering applications to manage patients with congestive heart failure. Admittance systems to determine right heart volume in patients with previous AICDs/bi-ventricular pacemakers/traditional pacemakers to warn patients of impending heart failure exacerbation. Admittance systems to determine ventricular function in transgenic mouse models of heart failure. Using the hearts motion to recharge implanted cardiac devices.
  2. Applications of optics to predict future heart attacks. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) uses near-infrared light refection from atherosclerotic plaque to provide structural resolution of fibrous cap thickness and lipid core size with a resolution of 10 microns, far superior to MRI, multi-slice CT, and ultrasound. Iron nanoparticles are being used in conjunction with OCT for the molecular identification of macrophages. OCT catheter systems are also being constructed for patient use.
  3. Application of nanotechnology to the development of the next generation of drug delivery stents. The current FDA drug delivery stents use polymer that can cause allergic reactions in patients. Techniques to attach and release drugs directly to metals without the use of polymers are being developed.
