Biomedical Engineering Faculty

Barry K. Norling, Ph.D.
Associate Professor
Department of Restorative Dentistry
Division of Biomaterials

Educational Background:
Ph.D. , Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois

Areas of Research Interest:

Research interests include development and evaluation of nematic liquid crystal monomers and monomer blends having ultra low polymerization shrinkages. These monomers are synthesized and evaluated for cure shrinkage and mechanical and physical properties including tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, toughness, cure shrinkage, degree of conversion and color. Further evaluation includes formulation and characterization of highly filled resin composites (> 60 wt. %).

Other interests include modification of bulk materials for improved surface properties including wettability and biocompatibility and surface modifications for the same purposes. Modifications include surfactant additions, microwave plasma grafting and surface coating via RF planar magnetron sputtering. Interests include characterization of surface modification via contact angle measurements and x-ray diffraction.
