Educational Background:
Areas of Research Interest: My research interests lie in the general area of computational biology. I am currently focusing on four areas. The first area concerns reconstruction of gene regulatory networks through computational modeling and integration of multiple high-throughput data. Collaborating with biologists at UTSA and UTHSCSA, we are now investigating the network of malaria cell cycle and Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus infection. The second area of interest involves modeling and processing of Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) data. Together with colleagues at UTSA, we are investigating new signal processing models and algorithm for accurately identifying low abundance peptide signals, which are often potential biomarkers. The third area focuses on developing a new classification method through context discovery. The method aims at accurate prognosis and diagnosis of disease including cancer and identifying effective biomarkers for therapy. The fourth area focuses on developing algorithms for effectively identify regulatory targets of microRNAs, a short non-coding RNA sequence that play important biological roles in many biological processes. In addition to above research activities, I am also an adjunct professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and affiliated with Greeghey Children's Cancer Institute of UTHSCSA. I am a recipient of National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award in 2005 and 2007 Best Paper Award of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. I am an associate editor of EUROSIP Journal on Bioinformatics and Computational Biology.
