Dean's Message
Welcome to the College of Engineering at The University of Texas at San Antonio, where education and research are our highest priorities and excellence is the motto. The college is the major public provider of undergraduate and graduate engineering education in South Texas with an enrollment exceeding 2,600 students. We have seen an unprecedented increase of greater than 110% in enrollment over the past few years, and we continue to grow steadily. We are in the top ten for producing the most Hispanic engineers nationwide.
If you are looking for an exciting and rewarding career in the increasingly high-tech world of the 21st century, engineering is the correct choice and UTSA is the right place to be.
Our undergraduate programs in Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering are ABET accredited. A Bachelor of Science degree program in Biomedical Engineering was recently approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and will begin Fall 2011. The programs offer curricula that combine a strong theoretical background with hands-on experience in excellent labs, and focus on teamwork and communication skills. We emphasize close interaction with outstanding faculty to create an atmosphere conducive to learning.
At the graduate level we offer Master of Science degrees in Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing and Enterprise Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Our doctoral programs include Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. These graduate programs offer opportunities for advanced study and research designed to prepare students for leadership roles in engineering careers with industry, government, or educational institutions. They also provide a pathway toward self-improvement and life-long learning for practicing engineers. Over the past two years, our graduate enrollment has increased by more than 50%.
Cutting-edge research in a wide range of areas such as structural/information security, environmental issues, materials, biomechanics, robotics, manufacturing, computational modeling, and sustainability is federally/state funded and contributes to maintain US competitiveness and security of the state and nation. To aid the economic development of the nation the College also works closely with industry. Since the year 2000 our annual research funding has increased almost 10-fold.
UTSA has established a clear goal to become a top-tier research university. In 2006, we expanded into the $84-million, 225,000-square-foot Biotechnology, Sciences and Engineering (BSE) Building to support new research initiatives and accommodate enrollment growth. The BSE Building is one of the largest educational buildings in the state of Texas and boasts state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities. Construction of the 150,000-square-foot Applied Engineering and Technology (AET) Building was recently completed. The AET Building was designed to support world-class research and teaching in science and engineering. The four-floor facility includes 87 faculty offices, 36 laboratories, five classrooms and collaborative study niches. The ground floor includes classroom and laboratory space.
We are the fastest growing college of engineering in Texas. If you are looking for an exceptional engineering educational experience in one of the most diverse and beautiful cities in the United States, come join us as we Shape the Technology of Tomorrow.
