A Welcome Message from the Department Chair
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the website of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Within you will find not only our academic profile, but also the people—students, staff, and faculty—who contribute to our growth and success.During the past several years, the department has grown dramatically and developed exciting programs with contributions from many active constituents. Currently, the department offers B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, M.S. degree in Computer Engineering, and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering. During the past 6 years, the department has enjoyed its success of awarding 16 Ph.D. degrees since its first inception in 2002. Several renowned faculty members have joined to the department recently and we have successfully recruited many excellent junior faculty. Notably, several faculty members have received two National Science Foundation Career Awards and one Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU); and selected faculty achievements include three IEEE Fellows, one SPIE Fellow, and two Ceramic Society Fellows.
Our students continue to demonstrate their talent by winning national and local competitions including the Robotics Competition in the IEEE Region 5 Conference in April 2008. The designs of several of our seniors have been recognized by first and second place prizes in the UTSA Entrepreneurship Competition in conjunction with the School of Business. Students are also benefitting by activities organized by IEEE and the Eta, Kappa, Nu honor society.
Our move to the new Biotechnology, Science and Engineering (BSE) building in 2006 has provided us with unparalleled teaching and research facilities. To complement excellence in teaching, the department has upgraded its teaching equipment and facilities. We have established three senior laboratories for our elective courses – the Embedded Control Lab, the Communications and Digital Signal Processing Lab and the Senior Design Lab together with the existing Computer Engineering Lab. The department also continues to upgrade its laboratory equipment for beginning level courses.
Recently, we also revised our B.S. curriculum to accommodate the required credit hours set by the State Education Board and ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology). In order to meet academic standards, the department currently offers five concentration areas:
As you visit our website, keep in mind that we are always happy to receive visitors. If you are alumni of our department, please take a few moments to complete our Alumni Survey. We are proud of our alumni and our students are inspired by their achievements.
