UTSA wins 3rd Place in ASCE Steel Bridge Competition in Beaumont , TX January 2008

Our ASCE Student Chapter won 3rd place overall out of 10 teams competing in the Texas-Mexico Region Bridge competition.  Our team received four awards:  for Display, and in Construction Speed, Construction Economy and Lightness.  The bridge was a double arch design with a 21ft road deck, and held a concentrated load of one ton with only a 1.3in deflection.  The team consisted of Patricia Santamaria (project manager), Brad Banks (team captain), Sally Bittick, Marty Jones, Claude Lambaria, Emanuel Rodriguez, and Mario Villarreal.  Other group members were Vince Guerra, Thomas Hamer, Zach Kricus, and Sean Smith.  The team worked for several months to design and build the bridge using steel tubing, angle iron, and 3/16in bars.  The group members not only built the bridge but learned practical applications of theory, as well as how to use many of the tools in the university machine shop including the mig welder.
