Program of Study

Soon after starting doctoral studies, a Ph.D. student should begin to consider research directions for a dissertation, to select a Supervising Professor, and to become involved in research. The first step is to submit a Program of Study for approval. The Program of Study documents the student's intended field of study and area of specialization. The student can, and in many cases will, revise the Program of Study as the research directions and interest become clearer.

Typical doctoral studies will consist of at least 81 hours beyond the Bachelor's Degree. The number of hours beyond a Master's Degree will be determined on a case by case basis. Undergraduate courses, general education courses, and prerequisites for graduate courses cannot be counted toward this total. The hours are divided as follows:

  1. Courses required of all students in the proposed program - 22 hours
  2. Elective courses prescribed for those students - at least 9 hours
  3. Courses freely elected by student - at least 9 hours
  4. Dissertation/Research, Seminar, Lab Rotations,and Teaching - at least 15 hours
